Emmanuel Babled was born in France in 1967.
STUDIES
In 1989, at the age of 22, he graduated in industrial design at IED.
CAREER
He made his first experiences in Paris where he immediately distinguished himself for the realization of interior architecture and decoration projects for private homes, working also with some important French companies for the creation of furniture and objects for the home.
In 1992he opened his studio in Milan, Emmanuel Babled Studio, starting to design for several Italian companies. His approach to design is based on the idea that a good project is the result of direct contact with the environment in which it is created. These are the main ingredients that determine the success of his business as a designer. Here he remains for eighteen years.
Since 2001 he has been working as a visiting professor with the Domus Academy in Italy and the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2006 he was chosen by the European Institute of Design in Milan as director for the master Glass and Venetian Art.
In 2011 he moved to Amsterdam and then settled in Lisbon in early 2016 where he currently resides. Here he opened his studio Babled Design Lda where he works with a team and a pan-European production, that collaborate with many European craft districts and leads them to a worldwide visibility promotes craft production towards a world market of international connoisseurs.
Driven by anthropological interest and physical presence, it integrates the observation of materials and techniques in their authentic environment linked to social places and conditions.
Babled Design creates works of art with the highest quality and experience in craftsmanship, mixing ancient knowledge with high-performance technological tools to enable sophisticated manufacturing processes to create iconic pieces and inspire the design community.
CONFERENCES
In Portugal, Babled has created a co-working space to host start-ups, associations, designers and creative activities.
These include a program of lectures and presentations by Fatima Durkee related to the reintroduction of the craft process as an alternative to standard production and taking into account sustainability for both the planet and for the human beings involved (www.the3rdfloor.net/the-3rd-floor-program-and-events/).
Several associations are currently hosted in coworking, such as the Portuguese agency of the United Nations IOM “International Organization of Migration” (www.iom.int/countries/portugal) and Passa Ao Futuro (www.passaaofuturo.com/).
Passo ao Futuro collaborated on the “think tank” program in Lisbon and develops workshops and residential programs for designers and artisans.
They are also the promoters of the program Reimagine Decorative Arts Residency, this project is a collaboration with FRESS – Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva, which invites designers to challenge the artisans affiliated to the foundation.
