Giogali is a collection of glass lamps born from a simple yet revolutionary design concept: a single modular crystal element, the hook, capable of creating endless lighting arrangements. Designed in 1967 by Angelo Mangiarotti for Vistosi, the collection is one of the most recognisable icons of Italian design, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the Venetian chandelier tradition.
The design is based on a single hand-crafted glass module, which can be linked together in sequence to create crystal chains and lighting structures with free-form, dramatic shapes. From this principle emerges a fully modular system: the hooks intertwine to create compositions reminiscent of cascades of light—light and dynamic—capable of adapting to different spaces and architectural contexts.
The collection’s name derives from the Venetian term “giongher”, the strap used in the countryside to tie the cart to the yoke. This reference to tradition becomes a metaphor for the design process, in which the act of joining the elements generates the entire lighting structure.
The collection comprises various types – suspension, ceiling, wall and floor – and allows for the creation of arrangements of different sizes, ranging from compact installations to large-scale lighting displays. Over time, the design has evolved whilst retaining its identity: the light source has been repositioned at the centre of the structure and, in many configurations, the number of bulbs has been increased to improve light diffusion. The suspension system has also been updated with steel cables and a ceiling rose matching the frame, helping to give the structure a more minimalist and contemporary look.
Alongside the original version, Minigiogali has also been developed, a smaller variant that allows for wall-mounted compositions or bespoke installations.
In 1969, Giogali received a special mention at the Compasso d’Oro, an accolade that attests to the value of a design capable of combining glass craftsmanship, formal innovation and compositional freedom, transforming a simple crystal hook into a timeless lighting system.
